Sarah is Great Britain's most decorated female Paralympic swimmer,
having won 5 Paralympic, 6 world championship and 16 European championship
gold medals during her illustrious career. At the tender age of
14 and on her international debut, Sarah won the gold medal in the
100m backstroke at the Barcelona Paralympics in 1992, breaking the
world record by nearly 4 seconds in the process. Since then, Sarah
has developed into Great Britain's most versatile swimmer and has
competed in relay events at international level in all 4 strokes.
Sarah’s most recent success came in the Athens Paralympics
where she scooped 2 silver (100m breaststroke, 200m IM) and 1 bronze
(100m freestyle), with a British record in the 100m breaststroke.
In 2005 Sarah swapped the pool for the velodrome after a series
of chronic ear infections prevented her from being in the water
for long periods. After winning 5 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze on
her international debut for cycling as well as breaking the world
record for the LC1 women’s 3km pursuit, Sarah decided it was
time to move on and took up a place on the British Cycling team.
During her school days, Sarah was also a talented runner, table-tennis,
netball player and biathlete. Her running saw her compete in cross-country
for Cheshire Schools, whilst in table-tennis she was Cheshire County
champion for 3 consecutive years. In netball, Sarah made the county
team playing Goal Attack and as a biathlete, Sarah placed second
in the Great Britain Schools competition.
